Triathlon Swimming: Challenge Accepted


In central Illinois, most athletes are familiar with running and bicycling. Often though, tackling the swimming leg of a triathlon can cause anxiety or even discourage participation. Registration is now open for the first Dan Adair, MD, Memorial Triathlon on Aug. 28 at Memorial SportsCare, so let’s squelch your hesitation and understand what to expect when hitting the water at this inaugural event.

General race info

Adults and children of any age can compete in both the competitive and noncompetitive events, either individually or as part of a relay. Participants will wear an ankle bracelet to track their time and will need to cross special mats before and after each leg of the race. The timing system will capture the total time and subtract transition times between each leg.

 Benefits to pool swimming during races

Swimming indoors during a race offers competitors the opportunity to stagger their start times and avoid a lot of the uncertainties that come with outdoor open-water swimming, such as the inability to see the bottom, sun glare, poor weather and the mad dash of an en masse start.

Swimming in the non-competitive wave

This group will swim down in Lane 5, back in Lane 6, down in Lane 7 and back in Lane 8 to total four pool lengths, or 100 yards. The non-competitive group can duck under the lane lines or flip and use the wall push under the lane line, whichever is easier.

Swimming in the competitive wave

Competitors will swim two lengths in each of the eight lanes, always staying to their left. After two laps, swimmers will transition between lanes with a fast flip turn and push off. Round trips in eight lanes equal 400 yards before hopping out and crossing the timing pad to begin the transition from swimming to biking.
